BURNSIDE & ASSOCIATES -
TEN CASE STUDIES

PLAYA VISTA - 'THE VILLAGE'

When Playa Vista was established on the Westside of Los Angeles, it was the first new community in that area in more than 50 years. With its completion, the innovative mixed use community proposed to balance critically needed residential, commercial and retail space. In accordance with Playa Vista's master development plan, the community would create a place to live, work and play while protecting the open space and habitat on Los Angeles' Westside.

NEW MEXICO - COORDINATED CAMPAIGN IN 2000
During the 2000 presidential election, New Mexico was one of five national battleground states targeted by Al Gore. Early polling showed the New Mexico electorate to be equally divided between Gore and Bush.  In addition to acting as a bellwether state for the presidency, the New Mexico Democratic Party also had Senate and House seats to defend -- over the course of ten years, the once strongly Democratic State Legislature had eroded to a slim majority and was at risk for further loss.

ARCADIA FIRST AND MEASURES N & P
Appalled by the plans of the powerful Caruso Affiliated mall developer to convert the historic Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, California to a 800,000 square foot outdoor mall and a 100,000 square foot gambling facility, local citizens founded Arcadia First to block the massive building.  Confronted with Caruso's aggressive public relations and lobbying campaign, Arcadia First hired Burnside & Associates to slow the political process, eliminate the most egregious features of the project and stop the project from moving forward.

MILLION MOM MARCH
The Million Mom March made headlines on Mother's Day 2000 when more than 750,000 mothers and supporters gathered in Washington, DC to demand tougher gun laws. After this historic event, the Million Mom March transformed into a national grassroots organization with more then 225 chapters in 46 states. Seeking to build on the momentum from the Mother's Day rally, Burnside & Associates designed and led a national get-out-the-vote (GOTV) campaign to educate voters and, consequently, influence the 2000 Congressional elections.

BEVERLY HILTON AND YES ON MEASURE H
The Beverly Hilton retained Burnside & Associates in 2007 to manage its community outreach campaign to educate and persuade residents in Beverly Hills to support their massive renovation and construction project on a nine-acre site.  The project envisioned the removal of a five-story, 150,000 square foot parking structure, the demolition of a four-story building and the removal of an extensive stretch of office buildings and to build in its place, a twelve-story Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, an eight-story Waldorf Wilshire Residences of 26 luxury residences, and the Waldorf Santa Monica Residences, an 18-story luxury building with 64 residences.  Given the project was sited on the busiest triangle in Los Angeles - the corner of Santa Monica and Wilshire Boulevards and the nexus of some 90,000 daily car traffic - opposition from anti-development activists was certain to be fierce.  Beyond organized opponents, there were neighborhood concerns about noise, dust and truck disruptions, diverted traffic patterns and lack of parking.

BUILDING THE HISPANIC-LATINO VOTE:  MOVING AMERICA FORWARD
Going into the 2004 General Election, there was no question that the Hispanic and Latino vote across the U.S. would decide the outcome of elections up and down the ballot, and potentially the Presidency itself. In the key states of Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, the Latino vote had historically lagged behind population estimates, greatly under representing an important and ever-growing voice on Election Day.
